Ep 01: Lessons & Mistakes Learned From Managing Over 60 Personal Trainers

 In What's New Coach

Welcome to the What’s New Coach podcast. This is the show for personal trainers and fitness professionals who want to learn what’s really working now from some of the best fitness professionals and coaches that you have probably never heard of.

Today’s guest is David Otey who is a Personal Training Manager at Equinox. David manages over sixty personal trainers. That is a lot of staff and along with a lot of staff comes a lot of lessons. When David was in high school his strength coach, Dave Benfatti, took him under his wing, and David became hooked on strength training.

Coach Benfatti invited David to volunteer at a gym he was working at. David’s knowledge grew and he made connections in the sports world. He went on to college and majored in Exercise Science and earned a BS in Kinesiology and Exercise Science. He then worked as a personal trainer, speed coach, and a Fitness Director at Crunch Fitness before moving on to Equinox.

Today’s topics include:

  • How David ended up meeting Arnold Schwarzenegger at Equinox
  • How working at Crunch taught David the importance of setting up new clients with personal trainers because it will help them
  • Someone willing to fail and willing to keep trying would be “the best”
  • David’s favorite questions during an assessment – How do you want to change?, Workout partners?, Stress levels?
  • How David’s four week program to get people out of their comfort zone was featured in November’s issue of Muscle and Fitness
  • David’s favorite landmine (vertical barbell) exercises overhead press, pulls, anti-flexion, rotational power – pivot press and pivot twist
  • The importance of rotational power – this is what we do everyday. We don’t do enough work to protect the spine.
  • Expand your knowledge and expand your contacts to move forward in the fitness industry
  • Advice for parents getting their kids in a fitness program is to not overreact, practice healthy behaviors and wait it out
  • David’s eclectic taste in music and what he is listening to now from Metallica to Michael Buble
  • Getting back to basics and being consistent are the best ways to create a healthier country
